What is CBN? A Guide to an Underappreciated Cannabinoid

What is CBN? You’re in the right place!

One of the marvels of the plant world is that, despite everything we already know, new compounds are constantly being discovered that can have a positive impact on our lives. Just when it seems like a plant has nothing left to offer, a new component or different use will be found that proves it to be even more valuable.

In the case of cannabis, non-intoxicating elements like full spectrum hemp oil have completely changed the lives of countless people. Whether it’s controlling dangerous seizures or battling chronic pain, full spectrum hemp oil is a cannabinoid that has had a huge impact.

Now, there is a new kid on the block when it comes to game-changing cannabis compounds, and it’s called CBN.

What Is CBN?

CBN, or cannabinol, isn’t exactly new. In fact, it was one of the first cannabinoids identified as early as the 1930s, but it’s only now that it is starting to be more widely studied. CBN is a compound found in the cannabis plant that differs slightly from full spectrum hemp oil.

They are both considered cannabinoids, and while full spectrum hemp oil has no psychoactive properties at all, the same isn’t true of CBN. Although, you should keep in mind that the psychoactive properties of CBN are not the same as THC and are very mild, meaning you’d have to ingest an awful lot to feel any sort effect.

How CBN Is Created

In a dried flower, the CBN content of cannabis is naturally very low, often less than one percent, while THC can be more than 30 percent. CBN is formed as the THC in cannabis oxidizes. If cannabis is stored haphazardly and is exposed to oxygen, it will have higher levels of CBN than cannabis stored in an airtight container. Many growers and producers will monitor this “maturation process” to create products with specific levels of CBN.

Promising CBN Benefits

Although far more time has been spent studying the effects and uses for THC and full spectrum hemp oil, the benefits of CBN look promising so far.

As more research is done, it appears that CBN could be used as an effective pain reliever, an anticonvulsant, appetite stimulant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent. However, the most striking characteristic to date has been its use as a sleep aid.

A Steep Hill Labs study found that just 5mg of CBN worked as well as 10mg of diazepam for promoting sleep, with little to no intoxicating effects like you’d get with THC. This feature means it is also an effective remedy for anxiety and similar conditions, while allowing you to remain clear headed.
